Thirdwayv to Participate in First Industry Event Focused on New IEEE Standard for Connecting and Protecting Digital Diabetes Devices

Company Advisory Board Members Will Join Other Experts at the Event to Discuss How the Industry is Now “Securing the IoT Ecosystem for Medical Devices”

Irvine, Calif., Sept. 12, 2022 – Thirdwayv, a leading provider of end-to-end connectivity and security solutions for IoT applications, today announced it will participate in the first event to celebrate the recently issued IEEE 2621 standard for wireless diabetes device security. The University of California at Irvine (UCI) Cybersecurity Policy & Research Institute (CPRI), UCI’s Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences are hosting the event with sponsorship support from Diabetes Technology Society, which developed the standard.

“Issuance of the IEEE 2621 standard in May was a key milestone for diabetes patients and their families,” said Dr. David Klonoff, Medical Director of the Diabetes Research Institute at Mills-Peninsula Medical Center, a Thirdwayv advisory board member, founder of the Diabetes Technology Society, and chair of the IEEE 2621 working group. “I appreciate Thirdwayv’s sponsorship of the event, and how the company is demonstrating that the wireless connections that make digital diabetes solutions possible can be safe and protected against cybersecurity threats.”

Joining Dr. Klonoff in the event’s panel discussion will be Dr. Aiman Abdel-Malek, Thirdwayv’s Advisory Board Executive Chairman.

“Thirdwayv is an excellent example of how the industry is fulfilling the IEEE 2621 standard’s vision for securely connected diabetes management systems that can be controlled by users’ smartphones,” Dr. Abdel-Malek said. “Thirdwayv’s software development kit has been used to build IEEE 2621-compliant security assurance directly into market-leading Automated Insulin Delivery (AID) systems that require Insulin pumps to be always connected to a Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM). This type of solution is enabling tens of thousands of diabetes patients and their families to live better lives without compromising their cybersafety.”

Dr. Klonoff has received recognition for his work with agencies including the FDA and American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering. Dr. Abdel-Malek is also a diabetes management technology expert and has led healthcare business teams at companies including Insulet Corporation, where he collaborated on the development, FDA clearance and launch of the first connected insulin patch pump to receive certification to the Diabetes Technology Society’s DTSec cybersecurity assurance standard and program, a precursor to IEEE 2621.

Thirdwayv software connects and protects safety-critical products like Insulin pumps, continuous glucose sensors, and AID Systems. These and other IoT-based medical devices and systems are vulnerable to wireless hijacking and reprogramming. Thirdwayv’s multi-layered security software development kit has a small memory footprint and works with existing Bluetooth chips in the market. Its SecureConnectivity™ software ensures smartphones can safely control these devices using commercial Bluetooth and Wi-Fi links. The company’s AppAuth™ software adds a second security layer, validating the integrity of the user, smartphone app, cloud, and connected devices before they can communicate with each other. The third layer is Thirdwayv SeamlessConnect™ software, which ensures devices can continuously send and receive the most recent data to and from the cloud.
